Finishing and firing your work-
When you are enrolled in classes at Naturemuse Ceramics your material and bisque firing is included in session contributions. After you complete your first 5 week class series with us you are invited to book a Glazing Workshop to finish and fire your pieces made in class. The next step, Glazing 101 runs once per term. This workshop will provide you with the opportunity to glaze and for all your work from the class series. The workshop is highly informative and offers some very digestible theory, demonstrations of glazing techniques and assistance with glazing all of your pieces.
The Glazing 101 class then returns 10 days later for “the big reveal” where all the glazing course participants work is shared, followed by a light supper (provided by us!) and a group discussion surrounding all outcomes from the class. This way you are engaged in a highly informative process which sets you up for greater knowledge and success for future glazing. Once you have completed the Glazing 101 course and you rebook another 5 week class block, you are permitted to glaze fire and finish all your new work in class times, provided it is completed within your 5 week block.
You are completely welcome to take your work once bisque fired and purchase commercial glaze or make your own, and fire elsewhere. There are some great options on the coast such as the Clayshed in Kunda Park or Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre who offer firing services and community pottery studio space to work from at very reasonable rates.
For casual glazing sessions to glaze unfinished work you can attend a pre-booked session on a Thursday evening to complete your work. You must have completed Glazing 101 to be able to attend these sessions as they are in normal class times and you must have a basic level of knowledge. A $90 casual class fee covers studio use for the evening, glaze and glaze firing of your work. Work must be bisque fired prior to attendance and only work made in the studio can be completed in these casual sessions.
Please contact Fiona with any questions you may have or to book a casual glazing session!
From time to time a range of atmospheric firings occur if you are in connection with the studio. Firing costs are per firing and calculated by weight of your bisque fired work.
Please see all firing prices below (outside of classes & casual glazing sessions):
Bisque firing: $12 per kilo
Electric firing- midfire/ 1220 deg: $14 per kilo
Raku firing: $15 per kilo (space limited)
Pit firing: $12 per kiln (space limited)
Gas reduction firing- 1220-1300 deg: $15 per kilo (space limited)
If you have not experienced any of these firing methods before it is recommended you attend a weekend workshop in your desired firing method prior to booking additional firing. We only offer additional firing to students enrolled or previously enrolled in classes at Naturemuse Ceramic Studio as space is limited.
*Artists in residency will be offered firing at a reduced rate of 20 percent off. Please have a chat with Fiona about residency firing rates and opportunities.
Thanks!
