Raku firing is a rapid Japanese firing method where we fire bisque fired ceramic pieces up to around 1000 deg celsius in less than an hour! We then pull the pieces out of the kiln while red hot and engage in a range of treatments which can radically influence the surface outcomes such as clear ancient looking crackles, vivid mattes with colours that will amaze you, metallic lustres and smokey effects from other materials which make interesting marks on the finished fired surfaces. A hand made range of specialty Raku glazes will be available for you to use on the day for you to experience the alchemical magic of wild colour to create truly unique and dramatic finishes for your ceramic works.
Fiona will share her knowledge and experience of a range of techniques, material knowledge and forensic discussions in between each firing to build on your body of work and knowledge in between firings. You will also take home a recipe card to continue your practice.
Suitable for all skill levels and bookings are essential.

Wild Colour – a hands on Raku Firing experience
Term 4 Makerspace, 2026: Raku firing.
Saturday July 18, 9am-3pm
We will be undertaking in a series of Raku firing’s, and a range of exciting hand made raku glazes will be available for you to apply to your wares for truly spontaneous and unique results. Applied in a painterly process you will feel fully engaged in the wild alchemical process of using copper and other metals and compounds to get truly unique and one-off results. Lots of tips and tricks will be shared on how to integrate this new knowledge into your studio practice to extend and expand your potential outcomes.
What to bring: Please bring 6-8 small to medium bisque fired pieces, preferably in a raku clay or other suitable clay body. Taller cylindrical forms are better and more likely to get space in the kiln than low, wide work like bowls. Space is limited but firings are quick! Small bowls (tea bowls), cups, vases and sculptural works are ideal. We go by the rule “tall and thin always gets in” and the funkier the better! Contact Fiona for more info regarding work suitability on 0439654471 or fiona@naturemuse.com.au
Please bring a plate of healthy food to share for brunch, thanks.
We will build from basic to advanced glaze knowledge regarding alchemical reactions and application through a series of 4 Raku firings and results are instant and spontaneous. Through lived and hands on embodied experience you will develop your knowledge about ceramic processes and how to craft your own unique finishes. There will be lots of creative and technical conversations, recipe cards and forensic discussions to optimise your learning experience every time we open each of the 4 Raku kilns in the course of the day. It is a non-stop exciting learning curve and you will get to take your new pieces home with you on the day.
